Gabrielle Sofia Bennato
Born in Griffith, NSW
Gabrielle Bennato is an emerging multidisciplinary artist based in Byron Bay, Bundjalung Nation NSW, working across text, photography, installation and sculptural objects. Her practice explores themes of femininity, self-image and vulnerability, often examining the tension between internal dialogue and the way we present ourselves to the world.
Drawing from personal experience, Bennato frequently uses her own body as both subject and material. Mirrors, rhinestones, signage and reflective surfaces appear throughout her work, creating pieces that oscillate between humour, confrontation and intimacy. Through these materials she explores the language we use toward ourselves — the quiet, often harsh narratives that shape confidence, shame and identity.
Photography forms a central part of her process, capturing moments that feel both diaristic and performative. These images are often transformed through text, embellishment and installation, turning private thoughts into public reflections. By combining visual seduction with direct language, Bennato invites viewers to confront the vulnerability of being seen.
Her work explores the complexity of ageing, beauty standards and the stories women are told about their value. Influenced by artists such as Tracey Emin, Cindy Sherman, Barbara Kruger and Jenny Holzer, Bennato is drawn to practices that merge personal narrative with bold visual language. Each work acts as a mirror — sometimes literal — asking the viewer to reconsider their relationship with self-perception, desire and acceptance.Bennato completing her studies at the Byron School of Art in 2025
